A Whole New World

Since meeting Julie on Dragons Den, and securing investment for the Believe project, it has been a very busy, exciting time.
It has been one of the most productive months that I can remember (that little supporting nod of approval really gets the creative juices flowing). I’ve written three new songs, Lullaby for a Drowning Man, Lady Luck and Stargazing, and I think that they are all worthy of inclusion on the album that is planned as part of the project. The songs were all written on the acoustic guitar, primarily because I like the immediacy. I have tried working electronically, using the laptop as a writing tool, but for me it doesn’t come close to the physical pleasure and inspiration that comes from a resonating dreadnought.

I have just bought a great little gadget called a Zoom H2, which is a handheld recorder that I use as a sketch book. It enables me to record ideas quickly and simply, and it’s small enough to fit in my pocket (there’s nothing worse than thinking you’ve written the best melody ever, and then by the morning it’s gone). I also use a camcorder to record demos. I think that there is real value in seeing how a song looks as well as how it sounds. To see a song being performed can offer a useful insight as to how it may evolve.

I have to hold my hands up and say that when it comes to digital media in general, I am a bit of a dinosaur, which is one of the reasons that I am looking forward to working with Julie and her team. Their expertise brings something to the partnership that I am currently lacking - i.e. the knowledge and the foresight to be at the forefront of a rapidly changing music industry.

They have already introduced me to a number of software applications and sites such as Soundout, Slicethepie and thebizmo and I have to say that I am a convert. We recently used Soundout to obtain feedback on the Believe demo, and it’s a great tool for testing your material with credible international reviewers.  As the weeks progress, I will be uploading videos of acoustic versions of the songs on YouTube and MySpace until the whole album is included, and hopefully people will get a flavour of what this whole project is about. I welcome all comments. Here's Lady Luck on MySpace.

I am struggling on with the day job, but I am finding it increasingly difficult to focus my mind, when all I want to day is write and play (don’t we all), but for now, it pays the bills.
