Done and dusted with clinical efficiency, and only one minor, forgivable blip in Ukraine (it must be hard to focus whilst trying to dodge flares and missiles). England go to South Africa with their best ever qualifying performance. The England team is equipped with more strength, skill, and pace than ever before. Fabio Capello is proving his credentials and, as well as possessing the all important tactical skills, he looks to be a great man manager. I've got a good feeling about 2010, and come the summer next year I'm certain that the whole country (including those who wouldn't normally go anywhere near a football match) will be carried along with the excitement of the tournament. Based on nothing other than my opinion, I think that if you asked the general public for a significant English event from the twentieth century, a fair proportion would say England winning the 1966 World cup. These International tournaments are good for the country's morale, good for the economy and are momentous occasions. With the Olympics just around the corner things are looking up. I had a quick browse at Boris's plan for London over the next twenty years, if we forgive him his appearance on Eastenders (did that really happen??) the future looks bright. If we believe what we read he looks to be be addressing the green agenda, with the promise of clean air and lots of bicyles. Life is going to get interesting.

Since they were exiled from their Eastville ground in Bristol, and moved to Bath in 1986 (now firmly re established in Bristol) I've been a bit of a Bristol Rovers fan. Having a vested interest infootball songs, I'm sad to say that in 1974 Rod Hull and Emu probably scraped the bottom of the barrel when they released "Bristol Rovers All the Way" a truly appalling song, but worth googling, and guaranteed to raise a smile on a grey Monday morning. As a pick me up (absolutely no reference to football) it's only trumped by Sammy Davis Junior singing Mr Bojangles in a brown nylon catsuit (T.V. gold and a must see on You tube). In defence of Bristol Rovers, I would say, on a positive note that they have adopted one of the greatest American folk songs as their own, Leadbelly's "Good Night Irene". A chorus from the terraces can certainly raise the goose bumps.
